Government has recently indicated that 220 000 employees who are entitled to Temporary Employee / Employer Relief Scheme (TERS) benefits have not yet applied. This is definitely not because employers do not want to obtain the benefit for their employees. It is also not because all employers can afford to pay their own employees in full during this time. The reason for this could be the various obstacles that employers and employees experienced when applying for this benefit, and the enormous frustration this has caused due to time wasted. These obstacles could include the fact that the application process was amended various times, details around the calculation of the benefit being extremely vague, uncertainty about the format of supporting documents, and guidance being updated and amended countless times.
